Fnjóská

Fnjóská - Salmon and Trout Fishing in Beautiful Surroundings

Fnjóská is a 117 km clear-water river that rises in Bleiksmýrardrög and is one of the largest clear-water rivers in Iceland. Salmon and sea-run Arctic char are the main species during the fishing season, but brown trout and resident Arctic char are also found in the river.

The fishing season runs from 18 June to 18 September. The main runs are usually strongest around mid to late July. Most pools in Fnjóská are large and open, with steady flow and strong current, making the river ideal for fly-fishing.

Stangaveiðifélagið Flúðir in Akureyri has leased the fishing rights in Fnjóská continuously since 1969.

Rules

On beats 1–4, both fly-fishing and spinning are permitted until midday on 1 August. From midday on 1 August, only fly-fishing with a fly rod is permitted on beats 1–4 for the rest of the season.

All salmon over 65 cm must be released or placed in a hatchery holding box.

Until midday on 11 August, anglers on beats 1–4 may keep one salmon, 65 cm or smaller, per half-day shift. After that, fly-fishing only applies and all salmon must be released or placed in a hatchery holding box. Please note that this quota cannot be transferred between beats or between rods.

From midday on 11 August and until the end of the season, all salmon must be released or placed in a hatchery holding box.

All Arctic char and sea trout must be released throughout the entire season.

There are no limits on resident brown trout, and anglers are welcome to keep them for the table. Pink salmon and salmon from sea farms must not be released back into the river.

Fishing Hours: The morning shift is from 07:00–13:00. The evening shift is from 16:00–22:00 up to and including 10 August. After that, the evening shift is from 15:00–21:00.

Accommodation

Accommodation is included at Flúðasel, where the fishing lodges are located. Anglers must bring their own food, bed linen, towels and other personal items. The lodges are only for anglers fishing beats 1–4, and each rod may use up to two beds.

Please note that guests may not enter the lodges until 30 minutes before fishing begins. The lodges must be emptied and handed over no later than 30 minutes after fishing ends. The hot tub must be emptied after use.

Dogs are welcome in the area, but they are not allowed inside the fishing lodges. They may sleep in the salmon storage room or wader storage room.

To reach the lodges, drive east from Akureyri on Route 1 until you cross the bridge below Vaglaskógur. Shortly after crossing the bridge, turn left down Fnjóskadalur. The lodges are approximately 5 km from the junction, on the right-hand side, by a turn-off marked Flúðir.
